"Just wanted to tell you that you did an awesome job facilitating the focus group on senior housing last Thursday. I particularly appreciated your empathy, listening skills, respectfulness, and adeptness in guiding the participants to stay on task."  --Jayne Powers, focus group participant

Survey numbers are good for making broad generalizations but it takes listening to people directly to capture the deep, unique, and often complex meanings that lie beyond the numbers.

Using empathic listening and open-ended questioning, I harvest people's thoughts and reactions firsthand. Whether it's teachers sharing classroom challenges, teenagers making sense of an unwanted pregnancy, physicians struggling to implement a medical records system, or some other social issue--I sensitively retrieve people's reflections and synthesize the findings.

You use the information to assess needs, plan programs, set policy, and measure effectiveness.
